Red Drum, locally known as “Redfish” or simply “Reds”, put up a powerful fight. These saltwater monsters range from 2 to 50+ pounds, and they taste amazing!
Red Drum spawn near shorelines from late summer to early winter. Due to many local environmental factors, these amazing inshore fish aggregate in large schools near Pensacola Pass. Redfish feed on a variety of common baitfish and crabs such as Ale Wives (Ly’s), Bull Minnows, Blue Crab, Ghost Crabs, Herring, Menhaden, Pinfish, and more! During spawning season Red drum have a vicious appetite, and will strike just about any kind of live or cut/chunk bait.

As of September 2014 the size limits for Redfish are not less than 18 inches and not greater than 27 inches (overall length). The catch/bag limit is 1 fish per person, per day, & maximum of 8 fish per vessel, per day. Fish in this “slot limit” range from 3 to 20+ pounds. That’s a whole lot of fish for your freezer!
History of Redfish in Pensacola
Today, the Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) is abundant in Pensacola Bay, Santa Rosa Sound, and the Gulf of Mexico. Due to overfishing in the 1980’s, Redfish populations were once in decline. As a result of lower bag limits and a “slot limit” on overall length, Redfish have made a come back and are thriving!
